Do natural sub-sonics exist? YES, they do…

votive-stupas-bodh-gaya

One of the most eerie things i have ever experienced was in India In 2000….
After a morning of circumambulating the Mahabhodi Stup, Bihar/Inida, i felt the strong urge to chant in this place, this was a month before i was full initiated into the practice. Anyway, there were two meditators with me who were equally drawn to and fascinated by a particular Stupa (a monument representing the Buddha’s physical form) This was a Heruka Stupa and i was told that it was a Shiva Supa before that and nobody really knows it’s true age! Serious, it was not much bigger then a granny flat behind your average size Villa, but it was almost solid and the entrance was a small arch. We had to crawl into it on all fours and the energy in that monument was overpowering…  A vortex. The walls must have been 1.5 meters thick  and in the middle it had a small iron fence, where one would visualise the deity.

After a short of meditation, my mouth opened and i  chanted in Tantric deep voice…

The Air in the Stupa was electric as i started chanting. The more i chanted the longer and deeper my voice sounded, the longer the chants became, until i was fully entranced; and then it happened:

The Stupa started to vibrate,  resonate an octave below my chant, which is pitched an octave below normal vocal range with overtones dancing on top of the sound!!

It was like sitting inside a bell and the sound in my ears started to clip in the subsonic register like  a train engine at close proximity, my chest was throbbing from the resonance and the two meditators looked at me perplexed until they seemed to grasp what was happening…

What did happen?

i never told anyone till now…

What happened was a natural subsonic that i generated with my own, human voice with the Stupa as a resonator.  i found out later that i chanted a B fundamental with up to four overtones (probably one of the most powerful chants i ever recorded, and you could hear the sub and the overtones on the Mini disk recording i took… i was blown away. The Stupa seemed to vibrate up and hold it’s resonance as long as i made it “sing” with my long chants, similar to a spinning top when you whip it to keep it spinning.

On a scientific level, the deep-voice chant starts at Zero Herz and is rich in  Theta waves, so far so that it can realign molecular structures in it’s vicinity and cause brainwave entrainment, which is exactly what happened to us meditators, all vibrating at a fine tuned pitch.

Then, of course in good karmic fashion and because the Indian Power grid in Bihar is shoddy at the best of times, the power supply of my recorder was fried, the disk was scrambled and i walked away from Boddghaya with Zero recordings…

On my album Singularity is a chant similar to this one the title track itself - Singularity

Robert Fripp’s New Standard Tuning

The reason why this link comes first is of course the fact that i wrote ‘Q’ in the “new” standard tuning, which in all likely hood is not gonna be a standard, guitarists are lazy, lol. And if you click on John de Lancie’s picture it takes you to his biography, because he is a highly under-rated actor!

So i wrote this composition for the GitBox Rebellion years ago in this new tuning, that Robert Fripp invented in a sauna… The GitBox performed ‘Q’ up and down the country to standing ovations,  but we had a disagreement,  so i recorded it myself and it got released on Rattle’s compilation of “Different Tracks” as the opening piece.

The composition is complex and moves in multiple time signs and keys,  some of them uneven,  like 5/8, 7/8, 9/8 and so forth, in fact it opens in 5/8 and progresses from there. That being so because a ‘Q’ is an omnipotent being that freely roams the universes and probably (so i theorised then) has a taste for abstract and off the wall kinda shit.

The cool thing about it is though, that it always flows and glides and stays melodic and has a humour about it, even when it gets rocky and hard, and the ending is wow….

Going through my vast back catalogue of electronica recently, i found four recordings i did in the late 90s with lots of analogue bass and FM synths.

They have a spiraling, gyrating quality, mostly sequencing and sound very Teutonic. Suffice to they are based on four journeys in alien craft, the Third Reich Haunebu I-IV.

Haunebu IV was never built (so they say…)

but then again the Americans claim the jet engine, but he first jet plane was the Messerschmidt 262, right?

They were to go into a trance project, but then life got i nte way of art and i moved a few times, chnaged studio setup, lost audio data bla bla bla…

Opening that old box and there they were, on DAT. I put them on and thought:”Fuck me Freddy!”

Played them to an old friend who digs this kinda stuff, being worried that the quality is not so hot in comparrisson with whats happening now in electro, but he just said:” Don’t worry about hat, this is cool shit, people gotta hear it.

So there you go…

So i rip them in 320 MP3 and FLAC loss-less so you can download and enjoy for free!

Hopefully this weekend

…mein Absinth…

Absinth… Absinth… Absinth… Absinth…

Folding Space is one of my new tracks on Lotus Beat 2. It’s Electro at 148 Bpm with avery spacey trance like aural mist surounding the actual drum and bass engine. i used a vocoder to trnasform my voice and make it more machine like with a human atenuation. There are three converging bass-lines and even more morphing drum tracks with lots of cross rhythms, syncopations and drive. It really travels this piece; and of course ends with a bang, like a good space folding journey should!
